A fairer assessment of wastewater treatment in mountain huts

Cleaning wastewater is a challenge for mountain huts: the quantities involved fluctuate greatly, and as water is used sparingly, the wastewater is highly concentrated. This often makes it difficult and impractical to meet the requirements for wastewater treatment. Researchers at Eawag and the former Eawag spin-off Vuna are therefore proposing an alternative approach to assessing cleaning performance. Read more

Detoxification provides information about poisoning

New chemicals are subjected to safety tests before approval. However, their long-term effects on wildlife remain difficult to predict.  Researchers at Eawag have now developed new markers to assess the risk. Read more

Two new fish species discovered in Switzerland

Help determine the names of the newly discovered fish species by taking part in the survey. In the interview with biologist Bárbara Calegari from Eawag and the University of Bern, you can also find out where the fish live and how diversity in our waters is made visible. Read more

Interpreting traces of arsenic in rain

On the Pic du Midi in the Pyrenees, researchers from ETH Zurich and Eawag have analysed particulate matter, clouds and rainwater for traces of arsenic. Using newly developed measurement methods, they have elucidated the transport pathways of the environmental toxin in the atmosphere. To the ETH Zurich article

Wastewater monitoring meets with great interest

Current trends in infectious diseases such as influenza, RSV virus and Covid-19 as well as in the consumption of drugs and medicines can be observed in wastewater. Interview with environmental engineer Christoph Ort, who, together with environmental microbiologist Tim Julian, has established the field of wastewater-based epidemiology at Eawag. Read more

How inter- and transdisciplinary integration will fail for sure
Collaborating successfully in inter- and transdisciplinary (ITD) research projects is a challenge. A series of cartoons humorously illustrates how collaboration will fail for sure. The scenes depicted are intended to provide food for thought across disciplines. They invite everyone to rethink their own behaviour and discuss with team members how ITD research can succeed. Cover picture: Artificial intelligence, data science, modelling and digitalisation are now central elements of water research. Eawag researchers, in particular the Department Systems Analysis, Integrated Assessment and Modelling, use these technologies and develop innovative approaches and algorithms to identify plankton species, predict the toxicity of chemicals, simulate riverine biocoenoses, study insect biodiversity and the development of floods and droughts.
