"Mall Umweltpreis Wasser" for Marisa Poggioli
July 16, 2024 |
Marisa Poggioli was awarded the prize for her Master’s thesis exploring whether #spongecities can reduce toxic micropollutant discharges. Based on field measurements and a hydrodynamic model for Eawag's Urban Hydrological Field Laboratory, Marisa showed that micropollutants in urban stormwater can lead to increased risks for surface waters. She also clearly indicated that blue-green infrastructures can reduce the impact of micropollutants on surface waters. The thesis was supported by Giovan Battista Cavadini and Lena Mutzner.
Sandro Hunziker was awarded the prize for his exploratory Bachelor's thesis on the potential of a data-driven model for predicting #combinedseweroverflows. His results clearly show that data-driven approaches for the prediction of discharges deserve more in-depth consideration. There is no need for excessively large training data sets as even simple approaches perform well. The technical expertise was provided by Mayra Rodriguez and all data was collected at Eawag's Urban Hydrological Field Laboratory in Fehraltorf.
