About Me
My main interest is to investigate human-ecosystem dynamics in vulnerable ecosystems such as tropical regions and small islands to understand the drivers that can lead to a positive change for their future. I studied Environmental Science at the University of Florence, Italy, and then graduated with an MSc degree in Tropical Ecology from the University of Brussels, Belgium, focusing on human-wildlife interactions in the Galapagos Islands.
For my PhD I used sediment cores to reconstruct past environmental changes in the archipelago of Vanuatu, a key area for the human colonization of the Pacific. I combined biogeochemical and sedimentological analyses of lake sediment cores to reconstruct historical (100 years) and paleo (5000 years) anthropogenic and climate-driven environmental changes. The ultimate goal is to validate my findings with local knowledge and memories to understand indigenous communities’ resilience to environmental changes such as the ones observed in the cores (e.g. soil erosion, volcanic eruptions, droughts, cyclones).
