About Me
I am Senior Scientist in the Microbial Systems Ecology group (co-led by Martin Ackermann and Olga Schubert) at ETH-Zurich and Eawag in Zurich, Switzerland. I have a diverse research portfolio and my scientific interests converge on one ultimate goal: understanding how interactions between bacterial cells drive ecological and evolutionary dynamics of microbial communities that impact biogeochemical process crucial for planetary health.
My research develops general principles underlying the functioning of microbial communities at multiple scales of biological organisation. While this is generally a difficult enterprise, my research portfolio achieves an understanding of general principles by studying multiple organisms - both environmental isolates and model systems, behavioural dynamics at the level of single cells as well as populations within multi-genotypic communities, molecular mechanisms of behaviour and interactions, and evolutionary dynamics.
While my research uses a myriad of experimental approaches, three key techniques that I leverage extensively are time-lapse microscopy coupled to microfluidics and automated image analysis, transcriptomics and experimental evolution.
Prior to my work at ETH-Zurich and EAWAG, I was a doctoral researcher in the Experimental Ecology and Evolution group led by Christian Kost at the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Ecology in Jena, Germany. My undergraduate training as at the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda in Vadodara, India, where I gained a MSc in Microbiology.
