About Me
As a Master's student, I focus on understanding the population structure and migratory behaviour of Atlantic trout (Salmo trutta) in a small tributary system leading to Lake Lucerne in central Switzerland. The Atlantic trout exhibits partial migration, where some individuals migrate to the lake while others remain resident. In contrast to the resident brown trout, the migratory lake trout is classified as critically endangered in Switzerland. Understanding the factors influencing these differing migratory behaviours is therefore of high relevance for the protection of Swiss trout populations.
In my research, I use microsatellite markers to analyse the genetic population structure of the Atlantic trout in this tributary system. In addition to genetic analysis, I utilise tracking data to investigate the migratory behaviour of the trout. This allows for assessing whether genetic differences influence the likelihood and timing of migration as well as successful return.
Furthermore, I examine the potential impact of human activities, such as stocking measures, on the population structure and migratory behaviour of the trout. With my work, I aim to contribute to the protection of lake trout and provide insights that can improve the management strategies for freshwater ecosystems in Switzerland.
