Department Surface Waters - Research and Management

Context

Methane is a highly potent greenhouse gas. The seasonal and spatial dynamics of methane emissions is still poorly documented. In this project we focus on the seasonality of emissions and on potential emission hotspots such as reservoirs, deltas and river reaches with enhanced turbulence.  

Approaches

Surveys of methane fluxes were conducted in a hydropower reservoir (Lake Klöntal), a river delta delta (Rhone delta in Lake Geneva), a heavily impounded river system (Aare River).
