Emma Chollet

Why would you encourage girls and young women to work in science?

Science is so interesting and can be fun; it is a field where everyone should have the opportunity to bring their ideas and skills. I think that we need to be open, diverse and inclusive to do good science. We need as much as possible to represent diversity of people from all over the world to better understand it.

What do you particularly like about your work?

I like learning new things every day, meeting a lot of interesting people, improve my scientific skills as much as my soft skills.

Who inspired you to pursue a career in science?

For long time, following an academic career was motivated by the interactions with my math teachers who were men. But since I’m doing my PhD, my supervisor (she) became my role model on how to work in science.

What advice would you give to young women/girls?

To pursue their passion and believe in their skills. To step back from demotivating or inappropriate remarks they will receive during their journey. To share, not feel ashamed and ask for support when they are facing difficulties.

What are you particularly proud of in your work?

I’m proud of achieving important scientific steps, like writing an article or being teaching assistant of a bachelor lecture, and being able to work on my soft skills at the same time, like improving in communication or managing some group work as best as possible.
