Co-creation of WASH education with partners in Africa, Asia and Latin America
In collaboration with partner institutions, the WASH Learning Lab is developing and contributing to WASH education projects for students and practitioners in Africa, Asia and Latin America. The goal is to foster both theoretical WASH knowledge and practical WASH skills by blending different formats, such as online learning with courses of the WASH MOOC-series ”Sanitation, Water and Solid Waste for Development”, classroom teaching, site visits, interactions with WASH experts in the respective countries, and exchanges with Sandec researchers. The projects are demand-driven and context-specific.

Ethiopia – Jigjiga University: From university to schools
| Goals: | 1. Increase WASH capacities of students at Jigjiga |
| Duration: | 2024-2025 |
| Key info: | “From university to schools” starts with a WASH training for 30 students at Jigjiga University, featuring classroom lectures, online learning with the WASH MOOCs and group exercises. Upon completion, trainees provide WASH education in 15 schools in Jigjiga city, complemented by a WASH awareness campaign. The translation of the WASH-MOOC series into Amharic will improve access to the courses in Ethiopia. |
Somalia – Ministry of Health: WASH training for professionals in Somalia

| Key info: | This project is part of a larger initiative that aims at strengthening WASH capacities in Somalia. It is the 2nd round of the WASH training offered to WASH professionals in Somalia. It is led by the Ministry of Health and combines online learning with the WASH-MOOC-series, site visits and onsite learning activities. |
Somalia – Somali National University: WASH lecture for students
| Goals: | Co-develop and offer a WASH lecture for undergraduate, master and postgraduate students at Somali National University |

| Key info: | This project is part of a larger initiative that aims at increasing WASH capacities in Somalia. The lecture combines online learning with the WASH-MOOC-series, site visits, Q&A sessions with Sandec researchers, weekly classroom meetings at the university, and guest lectures from Somali WASH experts. It is offered to 150 undergraduate and master students of public health as well as to postgraduate students in epidemiology and biostatistics. |
Uganda – Makerere University: WASH learning beyond the classroom

| Key info: | "WASH learning beyond the classroom at Makerere University” is contributing to the WASH related undergraduate and graduate lectures at Makerere University by including site visits, modules from the WASH-MOOC–series, practical exercises with laboratory equipment, and practice-oriented guest lectures from industry experts. |
Uganda – Town councils of Wobulenzi & Kakooge: WASH + GIS training for town council members

| Key info: | In a co-creation of knowledge workshop offered during the Ugandan Water and Environment Week in March 2024, town council members from Wobulenzi & Kakooge identified the following two priorities to increase WASH capacities in the two Ugandan small towns: i) GIS training, ii) Practical WASH-training. These trainings will be jointly developed and facilitated by Eawag and Makerere University. |
