Department Sanitation, Water and Solid Waste for Development
Geneva Technical Hub
During three years (2021-2024), Eawag has been supporting UNHCR via the Geneva Technical Hub (GTH), co-convened by UNHCR and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC/HA). The GTH supports UNHCR operations in addressing technical challenges building capacities, thereby enhancing response effectiveness and service delivery. GTH provids tailored, context-specific technical solutions in response to field requests, alongside comprehensive technical guidance and tools. It strengthens the capacities of UNHCR staff, in partnership with Swiss academia, in areas such as Disaster Risk Reduction, Water, Sanitation, Solid Waste Management & Hygiene (WASH), Shelter, Settlement Planning, Energy, Environment, and Protection.
SDC/HA funded Eawag’s backstopping, consisting mainly in the development of technical guidelines and tools for sanitation and solid waste management. Eawag also contributed to capacity-building efforts via Community of Practice webinars.
Eawag is now building on the insights gained from this collaboration to inform and improve future humanitarian operations and disseminate the products in different formats to the broader WASH community.
