Organic Analytics & Omics

With the available mass spectrometers, covering triple quad and orbitrap instruments, organic molecules in water, sediment and biota can be measured by target, suspect and non-target screening methods. Furthermore, targeted and non-targeted metabolome and proteome analysis can be performed. Different inlet systems such as liquid chromatographs, gas chromatographs and ion chromatographs can be coupled to the mass spectrometers by various ionization interfaces like Electrospray Ionization (ESI), Atmospheric Pressure Chemical Ionization (APCI), Atmospheric Pressure Photoionization (APPI), Electron Impact Ionization (EI) or Dielectric Barrier Discharge Ionization (DBDI). Several online and offline instrumental setups are available for sample preparation. With the transportable MS2field instrument that was recently developed within an Eawag discretionary project, even on-site and real-time measurements with an Orbitrap have become accessible.

Measurement portfolio

We measure following analytes in water (wastewater, surface water, ground water), solid samples (sediments, soil and sludge) and biota samples (daphnia, algae, fish, cell lines)

  • Emerging contaminants: currently more than 600 environmentally relevant contaminants can be quantified with authentic standards (pharmaceuticals, pesticides, industrial chemicals, sweeteners, perfluorinated compounds, etc.)
  • Metabolomics: endogenous primary and secondary metabolites of aquatic species
  • Proteomics: Targeted and non-targeted (shotgun) approaches for bottom-up proteomics including post-translational modifications (protein/peptide identification)
