18.10.2013 - Alma Mašić - Thesis of the year

Awarded by Malmö University to Alma Mašić on 18.10.2013.

Alma Mašić received the award "Thesis of the year" on Friday Oct 18th 2013 in Malmö Slagthus when Malmö University celebrated its annual celebration and its 15th anniversary. The award was presented by the Vice-chancellor Hans Lindquist. Biomathematician Alma Mašić was rewarded with 50 000 SEK for her research on how, with the help of numerical simulations, one can see how suspended biomass interacts with biofilms in wastewater treatment plants - a thesis that could lead to better treatment of sewage.

Motivation for the award: "In her dissertation, Investigation of a biofilm reactor model with suspended biomass, Alma Mašić uses applied numerical simulations to study the interaction of suspended biomass with biofilms in wastewater treatment plants. Her research is a fundamental contribution to research on reactor modeling and a milestone in the development of mathematical models. In addition to its scientific value, her work will lead to improved sewage treatment and thereby improve the environment in the future."
